When the Taliban put a price on Afghan director Hassan Fazili’s head, he is forced to flee with his filmmaker wife Fatima and their two young daughters. Using smartphones, the family chronicle their 5000 kilometre, three year journey.

Refugees rarely get to tell their own stories, but Midnight Traveler has an immediacy and intimacy that puts a human face on a global crisis. The danger and difficulty of the family’s journey is balanced by the warmth of their love for each other. Fazili’s eye for unexpected beauty and the irrepressible spirit of his two daughters make this superbly crafted film unique amongst migration stories.

A family’s joint testimony, heartfelt and hauntingly representative
