Most young people in Sudan have never been to the cinema. Thirty years of government repression has decimated the Sudanese film industry, but four veteran directors are fighting back.

The lifelong friends begin by traveling to communities with their ancient projector, until they set their sights on reopening the “Revolution Cinema.” It’s not an easy task, and to keep up morale they entertain each other by acting out scenes from classic films and their own screenplays. A rare cinematic gem that reminds us of the power of cinema, friendship and laughter in the face of adversity.

With unfailing artistry, director Suhaib Gasmelbari captures how cinema can be essential and why these men, with their unquenchable passion and respect for one another, deserve to be feted as our godfathers.
